According to a press release from the official Alaska State website, Alaska has reached a settlement of $7.8 million with vape brand Juul and its main investor Altria over allegations of marketing vapes to teenagers, ending a five-year lawsuit since November 2020.

Quick overview of key points
1. Alaska and Juul have reached a $5.8 million settlement, with Altria having previously paid $2 million.
2. The total per capita compensation of 7.8 million US dollars ranks among the top in the United States.
3. The state government accuses Juul of targeting teenagers for marketing.
4. Half of the compensation will be used for tobacco control projects, and the other half for consumer protection.
5. The health department warns that the proportion of teenagers using vapes continues to rise.

In January 2024, Alaska reached a $2 million settlement with Altria; This week, Juul agreed to pay $5.8 million over the next five years.
According to the consent judgment, half of the compensation will be used for Alaska tobacco prevention and control programs, and the other half for consumer protection programs.
The lawsuit accuses Juul of attracting teenagers through flavored vapes resembling USB drives and social media marketing campaigns, and expanding its influence with the support of Altria’s funding and marketing resources.
The state government stated that these behaviors have led to the rapid spread of vaping among Alaska teenagers, causing serious impacts on their health and behavior.
Alaska Attorney General Stephen Cox said, “This case took five years and the public health and consumer protection teams put in tremendous effort, but it was all worth it. We not only established court enforceable regulatory constraints, but also fought for one of the highest per capita compensation in the country for the state government to prevent and protect.
Alaska Department of Health Director Heidi Hedberg pointed out that according to the latest data from the Adolescent Risk Behavior Surveillance System, the use of vapes and nicotine products continues to rise among adolescents.
