British retail group Co-op has requested stores to strengthen the display and advertising of vapes to make up for the losses caused by a hacker attack that resulted in a decline in sales. According to internal documents, this measure aims to address a sales shortfall of approximately £ 1 million per week. Some employees questioned whether this move contradicts the company’s “ethics first” brand image.

Overview of key points:
1. British retail group Co op launches’ Powering Up ‘sales recovery plan after hacking incident.
2. Internal documents indicate a weekly loss of approximately £ 1 million in sales revenue.
3. The store is required to increase the display and advertising of vapes and nicotine bags.
4. Employees are concerned that the measures may violate the company’s “ethical retail” philosophy.
5. The government’s tobacco and vape Act may prohibit related advertising and sponsorship.

According to The Guardian, UK retail group Co op is increasing its promotion of vape products through an internal action plan to restore performance after a significant decline in sales due to a cyber attack.
According to the exposed internal document “Powering Up: Focus Sprint – Cigs, Tobacco and Vape”, Co op stated that “sales of vapes and tobacco categories have not yet recovered to pre cyber attack levels” and pointed out that “there is a weekly sales shortfall of about £ 1 million and a decrease in transaction volume of about 100000 times”.

To this end, the company has requested over 2000 stores to redesign their display layouts, increase the display areas and advertising positions for vapes and nicotine bags, and expand the product range to attract departing customers. The document states that approximately 40% of sales losses stem from consumers’ “turning to other retailers to purchase tobacco and vapes”.
Some employees have raised objections to this strategy, believing that it conflicts with Co op’s long-standing advocacy of ‘ethical retail’ image. An employee said in an interview with The Guardian, ‘In the past, I respected Co op because it adhered to principles.’. Nowadays, promoting vapes in pursuit of profit goes against our consistent philosophy. ”

At the time of the launch of this strategy, British society is expressing concerns about the increasing phenomenon of teenagers using vapes. Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer of England, warned that “if you smoke, vapes are safer; if you never smoke, you should not use vapes
In response, a Co op spokesperson stated that as a membership based organization, the company “always adheres to responsible retail principles” and emphasized that the sale of vapes “fully complies with legal and government smoking cessation policy guidance”. The spokesperson added, “After experiencing complex cyber attacks, we must comprehensively enhance our store operations to meet consumer demands
It is reported that the hacking incident in April this year caused some systems of Co op to crash, resulting in a decrease of over £ 200 million in sales and an expected decrease of £ 120 million in annual profits.
