The company owns brands such as Gage Cannabis and Cookies and has withdrawn from the Michigan market.
The Toronto based company announced in a press release that it will sell or divest all of its assets in Michigan, including four planting and processing facilities, 20 retail stores, and real estate, and is expected to complete its exit in the second half of this year. In the Detroit metropolitan area, Gage Pharmacy in Detroit and Fender, Cookie Pharmacy in Detroit, and plantation facilities in Warren and Harrison towns will be closed.
The company has previously identified the Michigan market as an area of concern. TerreAscend stated in its recent annual performance that it has incurred a non cash impairment charge of $45.4 million related to the business unit, resulting in a net loss of $72.7 million for the year.
The recreational sale of marijuana was legalized in Michigan in 2019, but recent oversupply issues have led to price declines, posing challenges for industry insiders. Earlier this year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proposed a 32% tax on marijuana products – compared to the current 10% consumption tax and 6% sales tax – to help fund a $3 billion road construction project in the state, shop owners told the news media Detroit Bridge, which will exacerbate the industry’s difficulties.

After completing its exit from Michigan, the company will operate 19 pharmacies and 4 planting and processing facilities in five states including New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, and Toronto, Ontario. This strategic initiative is expected to significantly enhance TerraAscend’s financial situation. In addition to strengthening the balance sheet, the company expects key indicators including gross profit margin, adjusted EBITDA, and cash flow conversion to improve on a consolidated basis.
