JTI Plans To Invest In Building A New Factory In Romania

Japan Tobacco International (JTI) plans a major industrial expansion in Romania, with an investment of approximately 70 million euros to build a new modern factory in the suburbs of Bucharest. The factory is expected to triple the company’s existing production capacity and further strengthen its global export business.

The JTI plan this time is to relocate its existing Pipera factory as a whole to this larger and more modern new facility. The Pipera factory was built in 1994 and was Romania’s first international tobacco production facility, but it is currently unable to meet the latest technology and space standards.
The new factory area will be built on an 18.3 hectare piece of land, with supporting facilities including production area, packaging area, raw material warehouse, finished product storage area, and technical equipment area. The factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of 36 billion quantity cigarettes.

In response to media inquiries, Antonio Vencesla, Corporate Affairs and Communications Director of JTI Romania Moldova and Bulgaria said “We are currently evaluating the possibility of investing in the construction of new production facilities in the suburbs of Bucharest. However, as the project is still in its early stages, we are unable to provide further information at this time.
JTI employs approximately has 1500 employees in Romania, with business covering the company headquarters, factories, technical centers, and over 30 local sales offices. Meanwhile, the company also manages its business in Moldova and Bulgaria through a Romanian team.

In 2023, JTI will generate a total revenue of over 1.7 billion euros through its JTI Trading and JTI Manufacturing companies in Romania.
JTI’s partner WDP is a Belgian real estate company that holds industrial and logistics assets worth over 1.3 billion euros in Romania, accounting for approximately 25% of the local market share.
