According to Straits Times on August 21st, Malaysian public health experts and organizations are calling on the government to follow Singapore’s example and treat vape as a drug problem, implementing stricter penalties to curb the surge in youth use. Officials from the Penang Consumers’ Association pointed out that many vapes contain the addictive substance etomidate, and abuse may endanger health. He criticized young people, especially women, for being complacent about the harm of vapes.

The usage rate of vape in Malaysia is on the rise, especially among teenagers and young women.
Vapes contain addictive and dangerous substances, such as etomidate, which can lead to hallucinations and organ failure if abused.
Singapore has banned vape since 2018, with a maximum fine of $2000 for possession, use, or purchase of vapes.
Etomidate will be classified as a Class C drug, and vape users will need to participate in rehabilitation programs.
Current situation in Malaysia:
The number of cigarette smokers has decreased, but the use of vape is increasing day by day.
Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that thorough research will be conducted before listing etomidate as a dangerous drug.

N.V. Subbarow of the Penang Consumers Association (CAP) is calling on lawmakers to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs in e-liquids and take strong action.
The Chairman of Ikram Health Malaysia, Mohd Afiq Mohd Nor, recommends the full implementation of the Smoking Control Products for Public Health Act.
Amrahi Buang, President of the Malaysian Pharmacists Association (MPS), stated that MPS adopts a zero tolerance stance towards vapes.

Suhaizan Kayat, Chairman of the Malaysian Parliament’s Special Health Committee, has suggested introducing amendments to the 2024 Smoking Control Products for Public Health Act to ban vapes.
Senior lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla stated that various studies and tests are needed to determine whether the substances used in vapes contain drug ingredients.

DankSmoke COO Ricky who 13 years vape manufacturer noticed that “ a survey conducted by CAP, the number of cigarette smokers in Malaysia is decreasing, and the use of vape and e-cigarettes among students and youth is increasing day by day.” It means probably many people are using vape to quit smoking. So, there is another contradictory topic needs to be discussed here. If there is a one size fits all ban on vapes, will those who quit smoking return to using traditional cigarettes? And, can traditional cigarettes prevent teenagers or young women from being attracted to them? We are unable to make a judgment or comment on this matter.
