Michigan Pass Bill Requiring Tobacco Retailer To Obtain License

According to the legislation, Michigan is currently one of the few states that has not yet required tobacco retailers to obtain a license. The bill aims to establish a statewide regulatory system to strengthen law enforcement and accountability.

Singh stated that tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death in Michigan and across the United States, and adolescent tobacco use has become an increasingly serious public health issue. He pointed out that establishing a clear regulatory framework and strengthening retailer responsibility can help provide the same protection for minors in Michigan as in other states.

The main contents of the bill include: conducting regular inspections of tobacco retail venues, increasing penalties for selling tobacco products to minors, regulating online and delivery tobacco sales, prohibiting time limited promotions of tobacco products, and establishing a special fund within the state financial system for the management and implementation of new regulations. The bill has now been submitted to the Michigan House of Representatives for further review.
