US Hemp Roundtable Encourages Trump to Stop Potential Hemp Ban

Release Time:  2025-10-09Writer:  DANK SOMKE

US Hemp Roundtable. A leading cannabis industry organization has written to President Donald Trump, praising his role in crop legalization during his first term and pleading with him to prevent Congress from “reversing” the reform by banning cannabis products containing any amount of tetrahydrocannabinol.
In this letter – accompanied by an online petition that supporters can sign for Trump – the US Hemp Roundtable states that when the President signed the 2018 federal marijuana legalization agricultural bill, he “ushered in a new era for the American cannabis industry.

The content of the letter is: U.S. Hemp Roundtable Encourages Trump to Stop Potential Hemp Ban, Protecting American Industry
Dear Mr. President,
By signing the 2018 Farm Bill into law, you ushered in a new era for the American hemp industry. As hemp producers, farmers, consumers, and advocates, we are grateful and remain hopeful that your influence can save the $28.4 billion hemp industry that you helped make possible. The recent video you shared about the extraordinary value of hemp products was important, raising awareness on the positive impact our American-grown and manufactured products have.
Here at the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, our members are focused on giving Americans choices in improving their overall health and wellness. Unfortunately, the federal government hasn’t kept up. Despite a lack of federal regulation and clear guidelines, we’ve done the right thing with self-regulation and job creation, but now we need your help!
Congress is close to passing a hemp ban, reversing the work you led in 2018 to make hemp blossom. A proposed definition change to hemp, being touted as protecting Americans, would wipe out 95% of this uniquely American industry that you are so proud of.
A more effective way to protect American consumers and jobs would be to support and demand robust hemp regulation — age restrictions along with uniform testing, labeling, and packaging requirements. Outright prohibition is not the answer, nor would it make anyone safer. Banning legal hemp products that are already regulated at the state level will not protect consumers; it would only shift hemp to the black market and destroy a rising American industry in the process.
Please help us save and properly regulate the powerful, impactful hemp industry. A ban would put American farmers, American businesses, American consumers, our veterans, seniors, and more than 328,000 American workers at risk.
American voters are on your side on this issue. In Texas, a state with a rapidly growing hemp market, 76% of your voters and 78% of seniors favor legal, regulated hemp sales. In fact, more than 62% of Texans say they are more likely to support candidates who back the regulated sale of hemp-derived products.
Thank you for standing up for hemp, a proud American industry.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Miller
General Counsel
U.S. Hemp Roundtable

Legislators from both parties in Congress have also raised similar concerns, with a recent letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) refuting attempts to ban marijuana THC products. Members believe that this policy reversal will have a ‘fatal blow’ to the industry and, as currently included in the spending bill, violates congressional rules. For this reason, members have stated that they are planning to introduce alternative measures to regulate the market.
The online petition related to the US Hemp Roundtable is as follows:
We, the undersigned, express our gratitude to President Donald Trump for his support in protecting the $28.4 billion U.S. marijuana industry. We demand that he work with Congress to ensure that America’s strong marijuana industry is not disrupted or banned. We support regulation to ensure consumer safety and look forward to working with our elected officials to continue building this growing American industry.
At the federal level, although the Senate ultimately removed the marijuana THC ban language from its version of agricultural spending measures after Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) procedural protest, stakeholders remain concerned that it may ultimately appear in the final package delivered to the President after negotiations between the two chambers.

Meanwhile, Democratic senators also sent a letter to the leadership last month warning that if products containing any amount of THC were banned, the cannabis market would experience significant turbulence.
Dozens of marijuana growers from Kentucky recently urged their state’s senior U.S. Senator McConnell to abandon the push to reclassify some products derived from their crops as criminal offenses.
Paul recently warned that in the ongoing debate about intoxicating marijuana products, the marijuana policy movement is “wavering on the temperance side”. He is concerned that if things go wrong, the cannabis market may suffer a heavy blow in the next two weeks.
When asked about his recent conversations with McConnell and Congressman Andy Harris (R-MD), Paul said, “We’ve been working hard,” and the staff “are trying to reach a compromise.
Many conversations are constructive. They say, at least on the surface, they’re not trying to eliminate it – but I think in some ways, we’re talking to each other, “he said.
Meanwhile, Paul recently submitted an independent bill that would go against the marijuana ban, proposing to double the concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol that the crop can legally contain, while addressing multiple other concerns expressed by the industry regarding federal regulations.
This senator proposed legislation called the Cannabis Economic Mobilization Program (HEMP) Act in June. It reflects the versions he has sponsored in the past few conferences.

Harris supports the ban on tetrahydrocannabinol in his House version of agricultural spending legislation, and he told Cannabis Moment that he is not concerned about any potential opposition from the Senate to the ban – he also disputes reports about the scope of the impact his legislation will have on the industry.
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) released a report in June stating that the legislation would “effectively” ban cannabis derived cannabinoid products. Initially, it stated that such a ban would also prevent the sale of CBD, but the CRS report has been updated to exclude this language for unclear reasons.
The language of marijuana is basically consistent with the appropriations and agricultural legislation proposed by the previous Congress but ultimately not enacted.
Stakeholders in the cannabis industry have united to oppose the proposal, an early version of which was also included in last year’s subcommittee’s basic bill. It is actually the same as a provision in the 2024 Farm Bill that was added by an independent committee through an amendment passed by Congressman Mary Miller (R-IL) in May last year, and the amendment has not been enacted into law.
